KEEP OFF EMBU COUNTY AFFAIRS: WAIGURU WARNED
Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has received a scathing attack from a section of Embu leaders over her recent claims that the volatile Mwea settlement scheme belongs to Kirinyaga County.
Led by Embu Senator Njeru Ndwiga, the leaders told Waiguru that her statement could incite residents to violence and maintained that the 44,000-acre scheme was squarely in Embu. They cautioned Waiguru adding that that her opposition to the allocation and demarcation of land to 7,200 beneficiaries could worsen an already fragile situation. Recently, conflict between squatters resisting eviction and officials left Ireri Ndong’ong’i; a former District Commissioner and three others seriously injured after they were attacked by a machete wielding gang while on their way to the scheme.
Ndwiga stated that Waiguru was ignorant of the facts and asked her to conduct some research. The legislator noted that Ngariama Settlement scheme reverted to Kirinyaga after Kirinyaga was hived from the larger Embu district.
“Mwea scheme is rightfully within Embu, while Ngariama is theirs. When they sub-divided the Ngariama ranch we didn’t lay claim to it yet we had a right to it,” added Ndwiga.
His sentiments were echoed by Embu minority leader Lenny Mwaniki and Ruguru Ngandori MCA Sammy Muturi who said Ms Waiguru’s comments could cause bad blood between Embu and Kirinyaga residents.
